Millennial pink has been on the out for a while now – although I’m always partial to any shade of pink – and something must take its place, but what? Yellow. All shades of this happy colour are back baby, and I am thrilled with the change!

Iconic London restaurant, Sketch, which was synonymous with it’s much instagrammed Millennial Pink colour scheme, has unveiled their major new design by artist Yinka Shonibare and India Mahdavi and it’s all about yellow. Copper walls, yellow fabrics and large swathes of the colour on every surface available and it’s beautiful.

Whether you like large swathes of colour, or perfer a pop here or there I’ve collected some more realistic ways for the rest of us to make shades of yellow work in different rooms in your home. You can add yellow with paint, wallpaper, decor or furniture and add as much or as little as you want – there are no rules to this!

what yellow to use?

What yellow to use is a great question because it is a rather divisive colour. Experience tells me, however, that if you find the right shade and tone of yellow and used it in the right amounts, it can happily work in any home. Yellows are vibrant and reflective colours that help to create a happy, positive feeling and are well-suited to south-facing rooms that need some lightening up.

a pop of gold

Gold is an easy way to bring in yellow and because golden hues are warm and welcoming, and a bit more earthy than other yellows, they tend to work well in larger areas.

Dulux Goldie is a warm, golden yellow that is neutral enough for large areas

Porter’s Paints Sundance is a beautiful golden yellow that has warm, earthy undertones

British Paints Buttercup Field is a light, cool golden yellow that is perfect for an energising entry area

The images below show how you can use golden yellows around the home by either painting a wall or door or adding pops of gold with furniture and decor.

buttery sunshine yellows

Warm, buttery yellows feel sunshine clean and feel rich and fresh with shades that work beautifully in children’s rooms, family areas and places that need a bit of energy.

Porter’s Canary is a bright, clean and neutral yellow that will work with just about anything

The rooms below have used buttery yellows and you can see the freshness they add to the space.

zesty citrus

Citrus yellows have an undertone of green and look very modern and work well in darker rooms as they bring energy and light but they can be used in bright rooms more sparingly. They are full of energy and bring a fresh modern feeling to a room.

British Paints Citrus Zing is a clean yellow green shade that has a lot of energy and life

Dulux Apple Slice Half is a pale yellow green that is modern and fresh and looks great in bright or darker rooms

Porter’s Citrine is an earthy yellow green that is quite neutral and should work in most areas of the home where you need a lift

Each of these rooms has a pop of citrus yellow and they bring a clean brightness to the space regardless of where they’re used.

delicious caramels, ochres and mustards

These yellows are very earthy and almost brown in tone. They feel welcoming and their neutral base gives a depth and elegance to spaces. These colours look great in rooms that need a sophisticated and welcoming feeling, like a dining, bedroom or entryway.

Dulux Paints Yellow Varnish is a warm orange yellow that will bring a welcoming feel to an entryway

Porter’s Paints Overland is an elegant and earthy yellow ochre that has a sophisticated warmth perfect for a living room or bedroom

The ochre colours below are earthy but sophisticated and bring an elegance where they’ve been used.

adding a pop of yellow to energize

If you’re not looking for a big change why not add a pop of yellow décor or furniture here or there to bring some life and energy to a room?
